Hypnosis FAQ

What Is Hypnosis and How Does It Work?

Hypnosis is a state of mind where you are relaxed so that your conscious mind rests while you re-program your subconscious mind with positive suggestion of good habits and thoughts.

All of us have two distinct minds: the conscious and the subconscious. The subconscious mind is far more powerful than the conscious mind but is much less understood. The conscious mind makes decisions, thinks and acts for us and includes all of the things that you are currently aware of. The subconscious mind is our emotion, imagination and other thoughts, feelings, habits and urges that our conscious mind wants to keep hidden from our awareness.

We all have the ability to visualize ourselves doing and acting on things differently.  In the relaxed state of hypnosis we can communicate directly with your subconscious mind and make the changes that you want for yourself.

With hypnosis, you are in control; I am simply your guide!

What Is NLP?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.   Neuro meaning your brain and all its knowledge; Linguistic meaning language and how your mind hears things; Programming meaning how your brain uses and interprets this language.  Using this technique helps you learn the language of your mind and puts you back in control over your body and your emotions.

Is hypnosis new?

No, hypnosis has been used since ancient times.  As far back as the sleep temples in ancient Egypt to Hippocrates in the 4th Century B.C.  But it was not until the 1890’s that the word “hypnosis” was actually used by a British doctor named James Braid.

Can I get stuck in a hypnotic state?

No, you cannot get stuck in a hypnotic state.  You are in control during the whole session.  Your senses are actually more heightened during hypnosis as well as your awareness of your surroundings.  You can open your eyes at any time and end the session.

All I know about hypnosis is what I see on a stage where people are made to do stupid things. Is it really like that?

No, not at all.  Stage hypnosis is purely used for entertainment.  You are in control the whole time and will never be made to do anything that goes against your will or beliefs.   You will have addressed the issues you have with yourself before the session starts and I will simply guide you to begin re-programming your thoughts.

How long does treatment usually take?

Everyone is different and there is no standard time frame.  Typically with smoking cessation, 1-2 treatments are all that is needed.  Weight loss issues generally take 3-5 sessions.  We will discuss your issues before and I can then make a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Is there any reinforcement after the session?

Yes, you will learn techniques that you can do on your own to keep you on track. Individual clients will receive a recording of the session(s).  Clients treated in a group session are given reinforcement CD’s.  The CD’s will cover material addressed in the session(s) but will be more generalized due to privacy laws.
